OPERATION SANTA CLAUS
The County of Orange Operation Santa Claus program provides gifts and toys to children in foster care, group homes, needy children in transition who are abused, neglected, physically or mentally challenged, or homeless in Orange County. Disadvantaged families and at risk youth also benefit.
This is a County of Orange Board of Supervisors approved program, and is the only official County holiday toy drive. This program distributes over 45,000 gifts and receives assistance with toy collection through a collaborative effort of County of Orange employees, Orange County Firefighters’ Spark of Love, and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots. Churches, businesses and schools in the community also play an important role in collecting toys. Many collect toys through the Angel Tag program.
The Operation Santa Claus program is coordinated and maintained by the Social Services Agency, with support from community volunteers. Over 450 volunteers from County agencies and the community have been the backbone of Operation Santa Claus since its inception in 1962.
The Operation Santa Claus program has greatly expanded. What began as a small attempt to meet the needs of a handful of children has become a major event for the community. Each year gifts, gifts cards, checks and cash donations are selflessly donated at pickup sites throughout the county. Senior Santa & Friends
Senior Santa & Friends provides special request items and generic gifts to low income individuals who are elderly or severely disabled adults. The individuals are clients of Orange County Social Services and Health Care Agencies. Each year staff identify clients who would benefit from having such things as household appliances, special medical equipment, nutritional supplements, or clothing. Often times these individuals are isolated from family and their community or are otherwise vulnerable. Items received through Senior Santa & Friends help to enhance the quality of life, making life easier, more comfortable or more independent. Last year Senior Santa and Friends served over 2600 individuals. This was largely due to the efforts of volunteers and donations received from County employees, private companies, community based organizations and private individuals who donate to Senior Santa and Friends yearly. For more information please call (714) 825-3111 or e-mail Senior.Santa@ssa.ocgov.com.
